As quite a few of you will know already, I'm in my final year as a mature student at the University of East Anglia studying for a degree in Science with a foundation year. The course has been msotly focussed on Biology and Ecology modules and I've been able to tailor the modules to suit my scientific interests, mostly honeybees of course!

As the course has been full time I have been unable to focus my attention on the website and as such it is looking a little tired and out of date.

Snow Covered Apiary

on Sun, 05/02/2012 - 15:28

We finished repairing some of the netting around one of our apiary sites at the weekend and took a couple of pictures and then overnight it snowed and transformed the picture completely so I just had to pop back and take a few pictures!

The apiary with it's new debris netting and hives set at a reasonable distance apart to allow for easy access. Although the gravel makes a sturdy floor I still like to use a concrete paving slab to give a firm area for the hive to sit on. Once there are several supers stacked on top it can have quite a weight to it.
Covered in snow and looking very wintery!
